  • basal leaves dark green, irregularly incised
  • Similar species don't have basal leaves
  • flowers bright blue with yellow center, 5-lobed
  • endemic to South Texas, mostly in Webb and Duval counties and northward
  • mostly in brush on shallow calcareous soils
  • blooms in spring
