- vine, sometimes climbing high into trees but usually scrambling over flood detritus in river bottoms
- leaves large, usually 3- or 5-lobed
- flowers also large, yellow-orange, 5-lobed
- note elongate tips on flower lobes
- gourd round or obovate, green with white conspicuous carpellary (longitudinal) stripes
- long thought to be endemic to Texas, but now known from New Mexico and Louisiana
