- annual with showy yellow flowers
- each "petal" with a crown-shaped red patch near base and 2-4 notches at apex
- flower cup with conspicuous hairs
- found along woodland margins and open areas on sandy soils from Brazos County south to Brooks County
- blooms during spring
- extremely similar to false crown coreopsis (Coreopsis nuecensoides)
